Welcome to The Melancholy Muse.
My interest in history began with a simple question: Was what I believed supported by history?
As I studied Christianity, I wanted to know whether the beliefs I had inherited were consistent with the teachings and practices of the early church. That question led me into the study of church history, where I discovered that understanding the past often requires careful examination of original sources, competing interpretations, and historical context.
That pursuit of truth gradually expanded beyond church history. I earned a teaching certificate in history, followed by a master’s degree in history, concentrating on Native American history and the American West. My studies then returned to theology, leading to a Master of Arts in Theological Studies and eventually a doctorate in church history.
Throughout that journey, one conviction has remained constant: history deserves to be examined carefully, honestly, and with respect for the evidence.
The Melancholy Muse is the result of that conviction. Here I explore subjects including church history, the American Civil War, Native American history, early European exploration of the Americas, and other topics that deserve thoughtful investigation. My goal is not simply to repeat familiar narratives but to compare sources, examine historical claims, and encourage readers to think critically about the past.
Whether you are a fellow researcher, a student, or simply someone who enjoys history, I hope you will find these articles, maps, bibliographies, and research projects both informative and thought-provoking.
Thank you for visiting The Melancholy Muse. I invite you to join me in exploring the forgotten histories, overlooked voices, and enduring questions that continue to shape our understanding of the past.
