Missouri’s Civil War Murder of Ministers
A study of the ministers who served Missouri’s churches during the Civil War and the violence that placed them in the crossfire. Drawing on church records, county histories, newspapers, military records, legal documents, and other primary sources, this research examines ministers who were murdered, persecuted, imprisoned, expelled, or otherwise caught in Missouri’s bitter religious and political divisions.
The study seeks to recover the names and stories of these men and women of faith while placing their experiences within the larger history of Missouri’s Civil War. Particular attention is given to denomination, county, community, political allegiance, and the circumstances surrounding each case.
